A vivid description of the challenge faced by every child of a famous person--to establish a sense of personal validity in relation to a parent whose formidability complicates the process of separating and individuating. Cohen's self-liberation is a tribute to her personal courage and to the power of psychoanalysis to help us reclaim ourselves.

Fern Cohen, a practicing psychoanalyst who writes beautifully, uses her professional skills to dissect her complex relationship with her famous jurist father and to describe her struggle toward maturity. In the process, she has produced a thoughtful, relevant and encouraging book.

Both the tennis court and the psychoanalytic couch are universes in which our teeming inner worlds can unfold. In this intense but accessible and sensitive memoir, Fern Cohen shows with uncompromising candor how insight grows and how analysis works as she struggles to move beyond love on the court and toward love on the couch.
